Hi! I have been watching this forum for about a year now and just now signed up! I have a 6 month old black and tan male from Czech line ( http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/685705.html ) and an 8 month old sable female ( http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/683565.html ). I am wanting to train one for schutzhund and one as our family protection dog. Is it silly to train seperate disciplines? And how do I know which one would be better suited to each one? I only know what I have learned from Leerburg videos (I have 5) and this board. Any info is appreciated.
Stevie,
You can compete in SchH with a PPD without major problems, I've done it with several dogs.
At your dogs current ages, they can be evaluated for prey drive for training but not defensive drive, as they lack the maturity to effectively show that drive, so you can't really determine if either dog has what it takes to be a PPD.
Both dogs have good prey drive, the female has very HIGH prey drive, and the male is very dominant. I do have a club I'm going to start attending but thought I would work on obedience and more prey work first
