One of my Dogs Kari (Intact around 10 months old) has an embarrassing problem.
1) When he meets me after any short duration (say 1-2 hrs) he will come running upto me wagging his tail/butt furiously, but he will be leaving a trail of his pee SPRAYED all over the place. It is like he has a sprinkler system down there.
2) When he comes upto me and I pet him, he actually gets an erection (His willy comes out) and he will start biting my hands very gently while he tries to lie down/roll over and he will be spraying the whole place. If I try to help him to get up, he wil make crying noises. Like whining, but he is wagging his tail and not in any pain.
I have stopped greeting him enthusiastically and will approach him very calmly but that does not work.
What should I do with the spraying of pee and the erection problem.
Is there a clicker way to fix this?
Will getting him fixed help?
Kind of gives new meaning to “Giving a dog a bone” . I’m sorry Ram, couldn’t resist but being the owner of three males, slight erections are very normal and natural - the tip of the penis protruding from the sheath.
Brought on by a sudden increase in blood flow due to any number of reasons, excitement being the most common, but stress and fear can also be triggers. Like humans, excitement can mean different things to different folks. For some dogs, just the sight of their food bowl can trigger it. This has nothing to do with sexual arousal. A full blown erection on the hand is another story but I don’t think that’s what you’re talking about.
Along with the submissive urination, this sounds like an easily stimulated, sensitive temperament dog. I would try and avoid eye contact as much as possible and keep your communication to a minimum. Dogs like this respond to the slightest body movement and pick up on non-verbal cues very quickly.
When you come home, let him come up to you but you don’t need to greet him. Just ignore him until the excitement subsides. When he’s settled, this is the time to interact. Again, very little need for verbal communication. Petting should consist of a short rub on the chest or under the chin and then move on.
And Ram, this is simply one of the many joys of owning a male dog, nothing to be embarrassed about. Neutered or not, the equipment works. He’s young yet and will gain more control as he matures. Remember those days sitting in class and you couldn’t get up to leave when the bell rang (I’m an only girl with three brothers – I pretty much heard it all).
If you’ve got kids around, make sure they’re not doing the squeamish “eeews”, this only adds to it. Just remove him from the room and let him settle or better yet, get him out for some exercise. Things like this usually don’t pop up when they’re good and tired.
Oh gee, Jennifer said in two sentences what took me a full page. Gotta learn to be more concise.
