I am a first time owner of 2 dogs. Since the new dog has arrived and went through the introduction periode, my first dog gets confused with the command being give out, mostly the no! He gives me the but what look.
When I say the name first it all work well. Dogs are 10 and 15 months. The older one has very good manners at home and the new one is at the piont where he can be left free with a leash.
So is it ok to use the dog name before a command when the 2 dogs are with me?

It only matters if you are trialing. There, you are allowed only one spoken command for an exercise. Using the dog's name counts as a second command. The exception is on the blind search where you can use the dog's name as in -- "CHANCE! Reviere".
Around home, use whatever works.
My 'Git back in the house' command is 'Cookies!'. It's what works the best. Nikki and Chance both head for the door and wait for me at the cookie jar.

French Ringsport is different. You must give the dog's name before the command for most of the commands/exercises.
Agree with you though, Charlie, the OP should do what works.

Agree with Charlie but I don't like to use the dog's name with a negative. Just a firm (calm) "No".
AKC competition also uses the dog's name before all moving commands. "Thunder come", Thunder heel" but it's not a requirement.
I've competed in both AKC and Schutzund and use only the command. I've not ran into problems with it in AKC.
As per Charlie, "Around home use whatever works"!

With multiple dogs in a household, it's often very handy to get the dogs in the habit of discriminating which commands are for them by using thier name(s). Like if you want to call only one dog to you and not all of them.
It's also great if only one dog is going out the door with you and the rest are staying home. When they hear leashes jangle and realize somebody's going somewhere they all come running, naturally. But if you can get them to understand "Only Jack" or "Only Ellie" then everyone but the named dog knows that the release word is not for them.
Also good for giving treats or pills. "This is for Jack." This is for Luca" --so that everybody isn't swarming for the same treat.

At one time when I had four dogs in the house it was mandatory to use a preparatory command. Roxie needs eye meds, I don't need for GSDs running to the kitchen at the same time. I've seen vids of Shepherders using names to reposition their BorderCollies.

... As per Charlie, "Around home use whatever works"!
Every command is prefaced with a name around this home. Even if I didn't work with other folks' dogs with one of my own often along, I would still need to differentiate among my own.
If nothing else, I need to say whose turn it is for a marker session, because, as I may have mentioned before, marker training is second only to mealtime with these guys. As it is, the ones not having a session sit and watch and raise their hands Horshack-like, saying "Me next! Me, me!"

With 5 dogs here, I use the dog's name if the command is only for that particular dog. If I want them all to obey the command, then I just give the command.
Example:
TONI HERE ~ means Toni had better drop what she's doing and hustle her little butt to me, but the other dogs can continue with what they were doing.
HERE ~ means that any dog outside better drop what she's doing and hustle to me.
I will also occasionally use the word DOGS to let them know that they are all included in what's going on... example: DAMMIT DOGS ~ means the poop is about to hit the fan
My dogs also each have their "you're in trouble" name. Toni's is her full name (Antonia) drawn out to 4 syllables.. ANN-TOE-KNEE-YAH.
I agree; do whatever works for you. It's a lot like having a house full of kids....

I can growl 'you better go to your room...' and in my house, 2 dogs scramble for the bathroom (where crates are kept) and the kids hustle butt to a bedroom.
Other then that basic threat, names are always used before a command, even though I only have 2 dogs- not the packs some of these crazy ladies have!!!!
