Thanks thats a great help, question tho while she is on the long line and say she gets distracted and wont refocus do i give a tug on the line or just jump and move around like a nut (my neigbors think im nuts lol) and wait til she refocuses and mark it?
My neighbors think I am nuts too...well, and I think the same of them
My pup is just six months old, so we are working on simple focus in the front yard. Think "hey lady, you DO exist out here" kind of stuff with a couple sits, downs, and recalls mixed in.
Currently, I am just marking/rewarding whenever he focuses on me. I did not take him long to catch on that I have SUPER treats! I do not correct him at any point, because I want him to CHOOSE to focus on me.
I will sometimes give a very slight, hardly noticeable tug on the leash, make a noise, or say his name if he is extremely distracted. However this is fairly rare because as soon as he figures out there is food involved...he is all mine This was not always the case, but working in the house and backyard has gotten us to this point.
For recall dog is on a long line. You would move the dog out adding distance in very small increments.
And yes, you might put a tiny bit on presure on the line to just get the dogs attention. But, basically,I don't usually have the dog anywhere but next to me until the behavior is proofed at a high level of distractions before I allow the dog away from my side. So I don't usually have to get the dogs attention back on me. I take my time & teach this slowly...if you skip steps on training (any training) it will come back to bite ya in the butt later on. So take your time & don't rush thru it. What it the saying: you reap what you sow. LOL
Just how I do it & my dogs will recall even when attacked by an off leash dog out in the middle of a field. But others may teach these exercises differently..this is what has work with all my dogs.

She is 10 months old, I know she is very young still, we do OB training everyday and I am not by any means trying to rush, I am new to serious dog training and just want to be prepared and knowledgeable about as much as i can wrap my brain around. I greatly appreciate all the advice and I am going to keep at it. Anne and Melissa thank you for your great advice, Im going to move from our yard to the big grass lot across the street and practice there on weekends, its so dark here (in the winter) when i get home from work to do a lot outside. I will try to video our session or sessions this weekend and post them, ill take all the tips I can get

Same problem here. I cleared an area in my basement and bought some cheap carpet just because of this. By the time I get home it's been dark for over an hour. Basically, I am looking at the next month as an opportunity to teach new things and most importantly, work on engagement a lot. Just spent 45 minutes down there teaching Vigo that I am the best thing in the world I am getting two Michael Ellis DVDs for Christmas and can't wait to incorporate all that...
I might try a group obedience class in January at the place I have been going to for years if I think we are ready for more distractions, because they don't care which of my dogs I bring to a class so I can take him as much or as little as I want.

Any distraction-free place works, from a garage to a back porch with a light to a cellar to an empty dining room. So much training starts out with (and/or breaks down into) small steps that have no problem with confined spaces.
For example, I back-chain training the retrieve with the dog releasing the item into my hand. This takes no more space than it would take for me to sit on the couch with the dog on the floor nearby.

Yeah we trained in the living room tonight because of the weather, I am in the process of finishing the basement we would be able to work down there when finished. I spent more time on engagement tonight and then we worked on some new things. Her focus inside is excellent even with the 4 cats running and jumping around, I need to work much more on focus work outside and in different areas were going to the park this weekend.
