Bommi is so sweet. They are both doing so well, especially with all the distractions of cars going by etc. Easy to see how much work you have put into your dogs.
What is the normal use of hounds like Bommi? Are they a hunting dog?
Yes she is very sweet. Believe it or not, every day in the morning when I come out she will insist that I pick her up and put her on my lap. Ofcourse I cave in and do it, and she will just sit in my arms idly and even doze off. Then I have to wake her up and put her down.
Rajapalyams are traditionally used as guard dogs. They are not very social towards strangers. That does not mean that they are aggressive, but they will not run up and try to make friends with some one coming into my house with me. On the other hand Kaiser will run up do a play bow, lick their hands if I say "OK , go say hello". Bommi will keep a safe distance and keep the new person under observation.
I once spoke to an person who is experienced in native breeds and he said Rajapalyams make poor hunting dogs for medium-big game (pigs, deer, fox etc) because they are white and they stick out like a sore thumb in the green forest. None of the animals that walk on the forst floor are white in colour. Actually nature hates white animals and weeds them out except in the poles.
Having said that they are used as chasing dogs in open areas. They make good dogs to chase and down hare/rabbits in open areas, dry river beds, fields.
I think traditional use is as a guard dog. I think there is not much difference between various indian breeds, mostly it is just based on colour and markings ( just my uninformed opinion). The combai might be a different breed, but all the others seem to be the same type of dog, may be varying in size/colour. Like the Whippet/Grey hound/Italian grey hound/borzoi/pharoh hound/afghan etc.
Ram, Bommi is doing really well! Training under all those distractions has certainly worked to your advantage. I predict good results at the puppy show.
