Hello all... I'm confused and hoping someone can help. We're working on house training our 12 week old GSD. We take him out regularly, usually every hour give or take a few minutes. We're kennel training him as well as using an ex-pen. If he isn't in either of those he's attached to me or my wife. I get up with him through the night usually twice. When we first got him home he whined in the middle of the night when he had to go. I would jump out of bed and take him out. Now he doesn't whine so I set an alarm. Every morning I've awoken to a clean kennel and thought we had a genius... until today. He peed in his kennel and then began drinking it. I now think he is peeing through the night and then just licking it up. I'm confused about how to stop this. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Get up more often at night.
When I first bring a pup home I plan on getting up three four or five times a night for awhile.
Imho you're going to have a tougher time, because now the dog isn't alerting you to his issue but is used to messing his crate and cleaning up after himself so as not to lay in it.
The only course I can think of for you is to set your clock for every hour or hour and a half for awhile. And get the dog out.
You can start extending the time frame both night and day after a week or so but don't rush it too much nor extend the wait time too long to quickly. Or it'll be back to square one.
Don't know if this'll help. I've never had to deal with this kind of issue I just get up and take the dog out until they can hold it longer.
Oh yes, I almost forgot.
You have had the dog checked for any urinary infections haven't you?
Also pick up the drinking water by 6 at night. Then no water until the am. Obviously you need to be sure that he is getting enough drinking water throughout the day or you will have other more serious problems.
He drinks a quite a bit during the day, but his urination is equivalent to the amount he drinks. His urine doesn't have a foul odor or anything like that. It's a nice clear liquid which leads me to believe he's well hydrated. He has no problem going to the potty and doesn't whine when he goes. I don't believe it's any kind of urinary problem. He's very active. We made his kennel about 6" smaller so now he literally only has enough room to lay down and nothing else. Hopefully that will help with peeing in his crate. I'll set my alarm more frequently and let him out more often through the night. I'll keep you all posted with how things progress. Thanks for the help.

I would think if he had been peeing in the crate right along you would have noticed it, smelly pup, funky smell to the crate. I don't think he could clean that well, if he does, send him here!
Did he pee in the crate during the day, or was this a nightime thing?

Well, my bloodwork and exam questions were about Addison's and diabetes, too (salt-craving with one, excessive drinking with the other). (And yes, a UTI can trigger it, too.) But Tammy made a good point about the odor, which would linger if he was doing that regularly.
Some not-quite-potty-trained healthy puppies do taste that interesting-smelling liquid, I have read.
I'd want to do exactly what Randy said. I'm not puppy-experienced, but isn't he at the age when a couple or three hours in the day and three to four hours at night are about his limit?
Even when I have a newly-acquired adult, I get up all night (every two hours) at first, very businesslike, no play or anything, to do a potty run. So much better never to let a habit start than to break the habit.
Thanks for the replies. The time that we noticed it he peed during the day. We got up with him very frequently last night and things went smoothly. We went to a wedding today and we were gone for about 4 hours. We got back and there was no mess in his kennel nor was there a stinky odor, so I don't think he went while we were gone. When I took him out he urinated quite a lot so he definitely had a full bladder. He has an appointment on December 20th, so if he's having problems still by then I'll get blood work done to rule out any addison's or diabetes. Thanks again for all the help.
