I am attemtping to teach Chula to pick up something and drop it in a box. The concept seems easy, but I'm not sure I'm going about it the right way.
First, I started by dropping some food in the box, just to get her comfortable putting her head in and over the box. Then I tossed her an item, while she was standing over the box, and told her to drop it. I phased that commmand out quickly, because I want her to drop the item into the box without using a commmand.
So, where we are now:
near the box, I will toss her the item, and she will drop it without any command; sometimes it goes into the box, and sometimes it doesn't. We've probably done 20 or more reps of this, but she does not seem to make the connection that the item needs to drop into the box in order for her to get the reward. Do I just need to do more reps? Once she understands this, I will increase her distance from the box, so that she has to move to drop the item.
"It sometimes goes in the box and it sometimes doesn't."
The dog doesn't understand the final behavior yet. (drop in the box)
I would add a "hold" command. That can be phased out as the dog understands that the hold continues till the next command is given. That may be a simple "out". In this behavior that command would be "Put it away" or whatever fits. The "hold" command can be done anywhere.
The "put it away" should be done with the box in front of her. If she misses then it's just a "nope" and no reward. Add distance from the box (slooooly)as she starts putting things together.
Mark and reward each and every behavior randomly.

Can you use a bigger box, or position her where she has no where else to drop but inside the box?
Her positioning is pretty good, and she might get it in the box 7 out of 10 times, but she's still not connecting that the box is a factor...(if that makes sense)
