I have a friend that's a research librarian. He loves it, but the career opportunities......ahem, let's just say he's over joyed he has a job semi close to what he enjoys.
Grab course book from a local tech school and check out the one yr degrees, see if anything perks your interest. My husband's hospital employs a fleet of young people with no particular training to get computers, printers, DVD players, TVs back going for people >40 who are helpless in the new tiny button pushing world. The fact that you can post a photo of your dog puts you in the "expert" category !
There are also all the new machines in the hospital, the laser knives, the ultrasounds, the bone density scanners, CTs, MRIs, etc. etc. all these are short courses that pay great. Lots of action, no patient contact.
I had my son when I was 21, so while most people were exploring all of this and figuring out their plans and careers I was just busting hump to do what needed to be done.
But now he is old enough that I can focus on me again a little and get this all figured out!

I read an article a while back about court reporters--a job that apparently pays quite well, are in-demand and secure positions, and it doesn't take that long to become qualified (2 years, I think.)

Well, I just finished my courses for a Bachelor's in Operations Management today. Took me 4 1/2 years. Over the summer I decided I was crazy when I signed up for that path and realized I want to work with animals. A vet technician would be perfect. So I looked up a private RVT school and enrolled.
Join the Military, do a tour in a Special Ops unit, and then work as a contractor - good money, travel, and varied, exciting work.
If I was younger, unmarried, and not a mom, I might just consider that.
I called the local community college with some questions about financial aide and to request a transcript and an appointment with the guidance office. The lady was like come on in!! we can get everything ready for you to start classes in january....whew that is jumping right in.
