Hi,
I have a rather unusual problem with my bullmastiff. Whenever I go for him for a walk, he has to defecate 2-3 times, depending on the length of the walk
So far so good, the "problem" is while the first time his stools are OK, the second they are very soft and the third (if any) time they are almost watery...
As you can understand this situation is very unpleasant because i cannot collect them for disposal (i always carry with me specific "stool-bags")
When he is at home he almost never has loose stools (i have him restrained in a portion of the garden), so i was wondering what could possibly cause this problem.
I had the same problem with all the previous foods as far as i can remember, he is 15 months old, 50 kg and eats only dry dog food (for the past 4 months or so it is Arden Grange Lamp & Rice).
Any suggestions would be appreciated...!!
Perhaps nerves, excitement of the walk, anticipation of fun. If his stools are always firm at home, and this happens only when he's pepped up, I believe excitement is contributing to rapid GI transit. It's a common complaint of owners with kenneled dogs who take them to hunt infrequently.
Kali mera, Tony and welcome to the forum. As Betty said,it really does sound like stress and you could be inadvertently contributing to the problem. Maybe try more, but shorter walks along with some short daily training sessions for awhile and see if that helps.
if the problem continues you might want to schedule a vet visit just to check things out.
My 3 yr old Shepherd did had the same problems when I first got him (at 2). First stool in the morning was normal, but during a walk, it would be very loose. It took awhile, but I wait about 3 hours after feeding to walk him again (morning and night). That seemed to help. Like you, he is on dry and I attribute the loose stool as territory marking and not enough time to firm up the stool.
Who knows? Maybe they have a secret agenda with the poop bag company LOL.
Kali mera ! Elaine thanks for the reply. It is very difficult to walk him more than once a day during the week because I am out of the house most of the day (to work). I will try this on weekends and see what happens
Betty you may be right, I will check it out...

Now you mention, it could be territory marking because, he is marking with urine all over the place during the walk, about 20 times or more (he doesn't leave a single spot that he won't mark)
Thank you all for the replies...
