I am looking to purchase a German Shepherd pup to raise and train in the sport of schutzhund. Can anyone tell me the difference from an Import or American dog? Which dog would make a make a better sport/protection dog and why?
I am going to assume that you are talking working line dogs bred here or in Europe & not German working line vs American line shephards.
I would be looking more into the particular lines as opposed to whether it was bred here or abroad. There are alot of nice working line dogs here in the states being bred.
A pup is never a guarantee that it can do the work intended at purchase. They are a crap shoot. A dog that can do sport does not mean it can do real life protection work. They are 2 very different things. Most of the dogs doing sport cannot do real life protection work.
If you are set on doing a particular job, you would be best to look at 12-18 month old dogs where you can see what they are like. It give you a better look at what the dogs are maturinmg into.
Working line dogs require a GREAT deal of work (exercise & mental stimulation) to keep them well balalnced. You need to be sure that you can give that kind of dog the work that it requires or it will become a burdon & not a joy. The average person dosn't really understand the amount of work it takes to keep that kind of dog. Be sure that you have the kind of time to devote to this before getting a dog.
Have you been to any local SchH clubs & seen these dogs work? Do you have any experience with working dogs?
