I am training both bommi and kaiser to start bringing odd objects like small aluminium buckets, shoe, stick, lace, small ropes, plastic mugs, hoops , door handles etc.
They dont like to pick up some articles that dont feel good in their mouths.(esp metal bucket), so some times they will run up to the object, and when it does not feel rright , they will return.
But bommi does some thing very odd and cute. When she does not like to pick some object up, she will search for some thing else, like a coconut in my yard or her chew toy . She will actually come to me and run past me to search for some thing else to bring. I have not stopped the behaviour because I find it cute., I dont reward it with food, but I did not scold her either Also it seems like she thinks it is better to return with some thing else if not the article I asked her to bring.
How about attaching a rope or cloth, etc... what ever they are comfortable with holding, to the handle of the pail so they will comply with your request? I can just picuture Bommi TRYING to please her dad!
if she was force trained she may be feeling stress to bring something to keep from a correction.
Even if her training was motivational her refusal to bring what you send her for could create problems.
She needs to know she must bring it whatever you send her for.
Cute tricks become not so cute in competition.
Bob, Is the idea of attaching something to the pail to make it more "comfortable" a realistic one, or would you suggest the dog bring it back "as is" regardless? Honest question - nothing negative meant. Thanks!

As far as i know, there are no dog sports that use a metal retieve object, so depending on what your training for using the rope or something on the bucket or even a bucket with a plastic handle should be fine, and the dogs wont have as much of a problem.
Not a problem "IF" retrieving different articles is just for fun. If it's a must do for some sort of competition then the dog needs to bring whatever she's sent for.
AKC obedience, for one, uses metal articles in the Utility class for the scent discrimination with retrieve.
Back in the day folks would feed ice cream or other high value treats on a metal spoon to bring a good connection to metal in the dogs mouth. I guess some still do.
I think holding different materials could be done with marker training easily. It's all about association.
Not taken as negative. I'm impossible to insult or get my feeling hurt over the net.
It's only when I'm close enough to get my hands on your throat that I get upset. JKN! HONEST!
Ram, if it was taught with the Ellis method I doubt that could create issues.
As mentioned above you could use marker training to bring a good association to holding different materials/objects.
