The holidays are hard for some people. For many of our clients, the holidays are just a reminder of what they don't have.. such as a loving and caring family.
We did not work on Monday as we were off for the holiday. When we came back in on Tuesday one of our teen clients was more withdrawn than usual. He is a very introverted young man, and does not really talk much. The level of the withdrawl was high, even for him.
Drift spent a LOT of time with him.. at lunch, at free time. She could be found close to him for the past couple of days. Staff all assumed that it was the "holiday blues" and didn't bother him.
I found out today when talking to his mom, that they had to put their old dog to sleep on Monday. The dog had been with the boy for 13 of his 16 years. Very sad.
I was afraid that having Drift around would make him feel worse and make him think about the dog that he had just lost. When watching them together at lunch today, I found that I don't have to worry about that. Drift was able to coax a small, but definite, smile from him.
When I saw that smile I knew that Drift knows what she's doing, and I need to trust that she would never do anything to make "her kids" feel bad.
