I've been lurking this fine forum for almost two years and promised myself if our new Malinois puppy and I didn't kill each other first that I would finally introduce her to the world. Well, Bailey is now two years old and finally turning out to be a wonderful dog. I'm providing links showing pics of her as well as her older sister, Tasha, a shepherd mix of 14 years.
I'm not sure how much participation I can offer this forum but I just wanted to thank all of you so very much for allowing me to lurk and learn. My wife and I are in our late 50's and have had dogs all our lives, mostly small ones or medium size mix breeds. We've done a pretty good job of training them to be well adjusted and well behaved dogs but haven't nearly approached the level we see here with you all. At one point, we wanted to try our hands with a serious pure-bred dog and eventually an opportunity for getting a Mal puppy came up. Couldn't refuse the chance and it has been a wild ride ever since. We have learned so much from this forum as well as all the Leerburg training materials. Bailey probably owes you her life because there were times during her "teenage" period that we wanted to take her back to the breeder. With lots of patience, extensive training, and thousands of walks, she is turning out to be one great dog. Many thanks!
I'm just sorry you lurked through all those challenging times instead of coming on in and letting the other mal owners ease your pain!! LOL! At least your survived. Two years is a good "transition" age.
Thanks for the nice welcome and kind words. We're proud of our girls and love them like crazy. Looking back, if I had the choice of dogs or kids, I'd have stuck with dogs without a second thought. Much more rewarding.
Bailey has had her challenges. We got her at 14 weeks, sort of late in socialization, and she started off pretty fearful of people and extremely fearful and aggressive towards other dogs. Much of that was probably due to our inexperience with such a strong breed. She's great with people now and has turned out to be real gentle and loving. With other dogs, that's still a work in progress. I love the breed however, so smart, loyal, and eager to please. She's also fairly soft so I just have to hint at a correction and she responds. We work with her constantly, walk or do road work about 20-30 miles a week, and she loves agility training.
Tasha's just a sweetie, very gentle and loving. We didn't push training nearly to the extent we did with our Mal but she's still very well behaved. She learned a lot of new things and rules just by our experience with Bailey so we found out that old dogs can, in fact, learn new tricks.
I've considered posting numerous times on this forum with questions and issues, but, in all honesty, just reading all the past threads, using the Search feature, and taking advantage of Ed & Cindy's wealth of DVDs and free training materials, I've been able to get just about all the help I've needed. We've also been lucky to have some excellent trainers and help here locally. We're still learning so I expect to poke in here with a question or comment now and then. I look forward to our future interactions.
I could go on about our girls but you've heard it all before. It'll all come out eventually.
Hi Greg, I am very new to this forum and find it very helpful,You have very beautiful dogs.I find everyone here has extensive knowledge. I am definately a newbee. My limited experience was to raise a couple of pekingnese when I was young and raise a couple of litters of puppies. I also had a beautiful husky growing up.My shadow is a great dog we are both learning together. My family and I have wanted a dog for so long but I have decided to wait until I wasn't working to be able to devote much time to her. My young adult children are legally blind they are 22 and 17 and love her. They ask me why I waited so long. I really don't know why the apprehension, I want to raise her well. So far so good.
I wanted to try posting pictures at shadow who is 5 months, lets see if I am successful. Thanks Lisa
