Describe the smell. Is he on non-deodorized fish oil? A few dogs exude that smell, which is easily fixed with the deodorized type.
I'd spring for a do-it-yourself shampoo parlor and get a better idea about whether he really does stink or is just still happily throwing off vomit/crap fumes.

It couldn't possibly get cold enough outside that I'd have a poop/puke-smelling dog hanging around and not take action.
Yeah, if it's not yeast or fish oil and is actually vomit and poop, I have to agree.
