Andrew and Kiersten, I am soooo envious of your skills and living in a climate where this is possible for a reasonable length of time! It sounds so very awesome.
So I've been reading through the info today. Very dangerous. Now I'm trying to figure out how to raise some extra cash so I can start in with the whole thing. I've been facinated by dog sledding for forever. This looks like the next best thing.
I have never done it with horses - only my dogs and even then it is just a fun trek in the wilderness on my cross country skis and myself and the dog harnessed up. It really is an enjoyable way to spend a day and it is great exercise for you and the dog :-)
Just got back from a 14 mile skijor. I fractured a bone in my hand (tarsal) when I fell and jammed my fingers on a boulder while hiking down the mountain last night. Argh!
So I was skiing with no poles hoping we wouldn't run into a moose in the dark. Icy trails, 20 mph, displaced fracture in the hand. Still very fun!
I'm bummed that our race season may be no poles only, if that. Well, things happen.
Yup, skijoring is addictive. Soon you'll be dreaming of a four-dog sprint team and next thing you know, you're running the Yukon Quest. But, honestly, I like one-dog skijor best for the special cooperation required between skier and dog.

Oh my!
I would have to agree with you Mara… Oh my! I haven’t been interested in it forever but since I’ve had an opportunity to talk an old musher and received a lot of good information from Kiersten, I’m hooked.
There’s a lot you can do before you actually hook them up. Training the Haw and Gee, pulling small objects (2x4’s, tires, red wagons). Figuring out who will be the lead dog (the musher and I had quite a long talk about this and it will definitely be Vince) or running them side by side. It’s been quite a process for us and they haven’t even pulled me yet. I’ve got a major problem in that I don’t ski, so to make it easy on all involved - baby buggy ski-sled joring will be our first attempt.
Ingrid, those horse ski-joring races look like a blast – now that’s something I could do – ride the horse that is.
(temporary set up. NOT a good harness to use for any distance, and I needed a spreader behind my dog if I was going to use that harness, but it was the best we could do at the great grandparents house)

Then you must fill your red wagon with children.
I do have a wide variety of sleds and everything from small cement blocks to toddlers for weight...
Another question - I know the price of a harness is pretty reasonable, but I have decent sewing skills and more time than money during the winter so I'm wondering if there is a pattern to make your own??
