hello, I have a dog who loves to track, she has had training for it and is very good at it! We dont want to compete or anything, just do it for fun and learning and it tires her out!
Am I able to lay the tracks or does it have to be someone else? We could get out a lot more if I could lay them. Im sorry if this is a dumb question, I dont know all the technicalities of tracking and sure Im doing some of it wrong, but its more or less just a fun thing for a high energy dog to do...
Thanks

If you want to take the dog toward something else like SAR, an AKC title or into the sport arena I'd get the dog on another smell as soon as you can.
Otherwise if you're just having fun (shrug), why worry about it?
I think anything you do which both you and your dog enjoy doing is outstanding! Not everyone is into the competion / politics of participating in trails, etc...
LB sells a great book called "Tracking from the Beginning" which I've really enjoyed reading.
thanks guys, I would love to have done sport with her, she has such potential I feel bad for wasting it, but I didn't know as much when I got her and now shes 6 almost 7, still everyone thinks shes a puppy, she acts like it. She has tracked lots of different people but as for consistently going out and doing regularly, will have to me be or maybe my bf(no kids to enlist for help yet Dennis lol) Im glad that its ok for me to do it if its just for fun b/c she loves it and its amazing to watch her, boggles my mind that dogs can do that!!
Read the tracking articles and will have to get the book next. Would love to learn more and eventually get a working dog, but with an ailing dog, a good things shes cute cane corso and my high energy girl my hands are full for a while!
Thanks guys, cant wait 2 get out and track

For some more difficulty (in laying your own tracks) add length, add turns, surpentines, track thru different surfaces, across roads, up & down hills, into, behind & across wind direction, etc. Add articles & teach the dog to down on the articles.
Awesome ideas Anne! Thanks! For articles she grabs and shakes, I knows that bad but I didn't know better when I taught her lol. I just love tracking, seeing her mind work is amazing!!
