Update!! Got out to training finally. Dexter did great!!! He still gets tired more quickly but is steadily gaining strength and endurance. We continue to go slow and steady but no side effects from the heartworm treatments have been noticed. He really brought it to the helper. It was really fun to see!!
Your welcome. Thank all of you for the kind words and encouragement!!I just hope no one else has to go through it. After all is said and done, I would do it again for my dog.
One thing new I have noticed is weight loss recently. I usually feed 2 to 2.5 cups of food(Best Breed working dog diet) and have had to go to 4 . Not sure if this has anything to do with the heartworm treatment or not, just different.
Been awhile since I have posted. Dexter is doing great! We have been able to return to full training now. I took it slow as he did fatigue quickly for awhile.Returned to training around Feb 17th and it took a good 8 weeks before he did not become completely exhausted with just short tracks and doing basic obedience. Now we are doing full obedience, tracking 400 paces and bitework when I can get to the helper.
I hope to compete for his Sch 1 in Nov. I take him back in July for testing again. In the meantime I have continued with Multi advantage on the first of the month and heartguard on the 15th of the month til we retest per my vet. I will then continue using multi advantage for heartworm control.
Lorelei, great to hear that Dexter is doing so well.
Someone had mentioned on another thread, the possibility that dogs who are at the upper end of the weight limit for the particular preventive that they are on may not get enough med if the larvae load is high. (apparently this is one theory as to why dogs are becoming infected who haven't missed a dose of HW meds)
I'm curious if this might have happened with Dexter. What was his weight when he was infected, and what preventive was he on?
