Thanks everyone...seems like he could be allowed on the furniture with little issue. I think I'm going to try it and see how he does. My husband is likely going overseas next month and I'm going to need someone to cuddle with while watching TV. He knows "off" and obeys it easily so I think we will be fine
Ah yes, I definitely always want BOTH of mine (all 160# of them) sleeping with me anytime my husband is gone - although it's usually only for 3-4 days when he races. I think I sleep better knowing that if someone did manage to get in the house (doubtful with JD's sonar hearing) they definitely would NOT get near me. Callie would lay herself across the bed in front of me and take off the first hand that reached out while JD had whoever it was by the leg.
My dog has to ask before coming up on MY furniture (my bed, the chair in my room). He's allowed on the couches in the living room without asking. He is required to move if I even THINK "off" and he does....so he's kept the priviledge
My dog sleeps on the bed with me some nights. Our rule then is that he stays on the end unless invited up to the pillow area. He also must stay completely moldable. If I want to move where he's laying he's expected to move over. So far we've had no issue and he's a great cuddle-puppy

This was an interesting thread. Best of luck to you and your husband Olivia. For my two cents I will tell you that when my boy was deployed last year his fiancee relented and let their dog in the bed with her (APBT = Champion class snugglers!)...I'd get frantic Skype messages from him in Kuwait begging me not to let her spoil him -LOL! When he returned the readjustment went smoothly and he gets down when told..I think like the other posters, as long as your bond and rank are strong -frankly whatever helps you get through the seperation!
When my husband is gone I end up with my son, at least 2 cats and Loki all in the bed. I actually find cats much more difficult to sleep with than the dogs.
I got really slack with letting them on the couch even without being invited, partially because arthritic Nico seemed to be most comfortable sleeping on the cushy couch.
Now that we are going to be getting new furniture I am regretting that decision.
I am sure eventually they will be allowed on the new one too, but I would like to enjoy a stinky-free non hairy sofa for a while. We are also not going to be eating on the new one for a while...it is a good excuse to have more family meals around the kitchen table.
