You can spay a female who is pregnant, but that needs to be done right after
they go out of heat, before mammary gland development. It is a harder surgery when the dog is pregnant, bigger blood supply.
I'm remembering more of my conversation with my vet now. He did say that in the majority of cases he felt that it was better just to let the girl deliver unless it was caught right away.
I was quizzing him after a woman had left a dog with a rather well known trainer/breeder for training and much to her surprise found out she returned pregnant. It was a mess and kind of a every one knew but hush hush sensation for a while.
Well, really, let's face it - depending on the vet's skill and owner's opinion, this dog could be spayed at almost any time during the pregnancy. Depending on your personal beliefs, the health of the female, are there (good) homes for these pups? Weigh the risks...

Couldn't agree more.
In this situation my number one concern would be my girl.
I personally would not want to spay an old dog in the last half of gestation.
Its an elective procedure, -- I think the delivery (in a dog that's done it before) is safer. If she needs a C-section, well, that could be a spay too I suppose.
