Hi
Here is my first post. I am training an English Mastiff, 15 months old who starting showing for conformation until he was 9 months old when something caused him to be fearful.
He needs help getting over his fear of going up the stairs in the home. Stairs are carpeted.
I will be building his confidence with some obedience training and socialization. And will be starting with reward marker training to help with the stairs. We will also feed some meals on the steps.
I may try placing a blanket on the steps, and have his littermate walk up first to see if he will follow.
Any ideas here that may be helpful???
Will he go up any stairs? Or is it just the carpeted ones that freak him out?
If hes just never been exposed to stairs I would probably start with a really short flight of stairs (like three or for steps) and not make a big deal out of it.
If it is just the carpeted ones I bet another dog would be a good idea. The pattern or color of the carpet might just look weird to him, and seeing another dog might help him figure it out.
Forcing him in any way will probably make things worse, having him on leash and encouraging without babying him would be the way I would try it.

He probably went through his fear period there. I remember my parents lab puppy who wouldn't go down our stair but would go down the babysiters house. (both were carpeted). We started feeding our lab pup in the basement. He whined at the top of the stairs for about 5 minutes then came down to eat, and has been fine since.
