My Belgian x Haflinger "Molly" was picked up at an auction. The same friend mentioned above was there looking at horses for herself, when she saw her. She was being sold by an elderly gentleman who had owner her for her entire life. She was born on his farm, and he raised her and trained her for riding and driving. His wife's cancer got to the point where he had to take care of her full-time and they could no longer afford the horses. He was crying at the auction (worried that the meat buyers would be the only ones who would want her), and my friend called me very upset too. I couldn't say no to that. Molly is the best horse ever. She's incredibly well-trained and will go to the ends of the earth for us.
The pony "Pokey" is probably a Shetland, and he's super sweet. He was confiscated from a woman who owned a pony party business. Apparently she couldn't afford to feed her ponies, so she set them loose on a pasture. Many of them foundered, so she tied them to a rail to starve them as treatment for the founder. The local animal control found out about it and took all the ponies. I got this little guy through the rescue who was trying to rehab him. His hooves were a mess when I got him, and he was very sore/lame, but with the help of a good diet and my incredible farrier, he's now totally sound. He's a great pony who LOVES kids. This photo is from a while back. You can still see a little bit of flare in the toes of his hooves. They weren't quite totally grown out yet. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v1102/196/88/736926616/n736926616_1721163_3748.jpg
Our horses are mainly just much-loved pets, although we are surrounded by nice riding trails and do ride them when we can.
