I could check smell against my new bottle for reference since I've never had the "pleasure" of smelling rancid fish oil.
That's a good idea. Of course, it could be rancid at time of purchase, too, but again, it's a bad smell.
Grizzly Salmon Oil, for example, smells strong and fishy, but nothing about it smells "bad."
A kind of interesting side note here is that some dogs exude that odor through their pores (I guess -- through their skin, anyway) after taking non-deodorized fish oil for a while, and most don't. JME. I have no idea why, but I do know it's not a factor of the oil itself, because the two dogs I've had who smelled fishy until they were switched to deodorized oil had the same oil as the rest of the dogs. Also, they didn't smell "bad." Just fishy. LOL

Oh, btw is there a noticable color or opacity change in Salmon oil when its gone bad?
For example does it get cloudy or lose its color?
I wouldn't count on a color change. It's way bad before the bacteria/etc make the oil cloudy.
Next time you're at home depot find the alaska fish fertilizer in the garden center and take a wiff from afar more than likely you can walk by the section and get a wiff. I imagine the smell is pretty similar from a few feet away to a newly rancid bottle being opened.
Results of smell test this morning: unused 3 week old oil smells same as almost empty 4 month old oil. Color same also. No hint of badness, just a light fishy/ocean smell.

I'd call that a strong vote for your habit of refrigerating the oil.
