If I get around to videoing it I am in. Professional level. I get a chuckle over calling myself "professional". Frost has been fine tuning her scent discrimination for utility and we are muddling along pretty good.
I'm taken with the idea of training scent discrimination. I can guess at how to do it, but would appreciate any resources--web sites or books.
Thanks!
I started Frost using an "article board" which is essentially a 3x3 section of pegboard. You start by tying down one article that is unscented by you with string or fishing line to the peg board and then placing your scented article down on the board as well. You give the dog the command to find the correct one (I use "Find Mine" as my command) and if the dog tries to pick up the wrong one, they can't because of the tying down.
Eventually the dog figures out the article with your scent is not tied down so they search out for that article. Gradually add more articles, initially tying the unscented ones down, and then untying them until all the articles are loose. In AKC obedience you have both metal and leather articles and most people train the metal first as they are easier to train scent-wise than leather.
Here is an article (that admittedly I have not thoroughly read) on training scent discrimination for AKC style obedience:
I have very good intentions of being in. I also have had lots of homework the past 1.5 weeks. So training has been limited to things that we need to work on. Sigh.
Hopefully I'll get some contest training in this weekend!!
Harley is all into this contest, Dexter on the other hand can't figure it out. He get interested in it just when he see Harley going at it, then he may try and give uop as it is too complicated. He won't even find the steak filled sox
Not sure how much luck I'm gonna have. This is now week 3 of having bronchitis I've been doing stuff in the house and he's doing really well, but is excercise is lacking. As you probably can figure out, with his high energy level and lack of excercise getting him to focus is a little difficult at times.
The good news is I'm hopefully getting off work early tomorrow and if it hasn't started raining by then we can get outside and get to work!
JD is doing great for the amount I've been able to do with him. Me, not so much We'll keep at it and see how it goes.
I think we are out as well...
the whole family is sick...most have the full blown flu with strep throat and one has bronchitis with the flu....the lucky ones just have strep....lol
Except my son, who managed to not get more than a bad cold.
Sigh...
Maybe next month.
We are out too, our laptop is still getting repaired and I have no way to get any video online. Plus these two weeks of being snowed in with the flu have prevented most normal activities much less intense training!
