I am starting to teach scent discrimination ( handler's scent) to kaiser. It is part of the next level of obedience class for KCI ( Kennel Club of India).
The test exercise at the competition involves placing 5 kerchiefs 2 feet apart and one will have handler's scent. The dog must go and indicate the kerchief and bring it back to the handler.
I taught this in my own method. I first taught him to nose touch a kerchief with my scent. I worked with just one kerchief with my scent for a week. then I made it two kerchiefs and worked for a few days and made him nose the one with my scent and marked that. Once he figured out that it was the scent that got him the reward I could move to 5 kerchief in a matter of hours. Not sure if this is the right method, but in absence of clubs I make up things as I go along. The other people who do this are the police and they use corrections for every wrong indicate/sniff. Did not want to use that.
Anyway, I will greatly benefit from your constructive criticisms.
He's doing GREAT!
Did I see a pile of coconuts over on the side of your roof? That reminded me of my gourds. I was able to get Pinker to smell out the one I had touched out of a pile of them, it was fun and worked well until I had basically touched all of them.
She tries so hard to get it right, if it's not right, she tries something else so fast it's hard to correct it!
You have done a terrific job training these dogs IMO. It has been fun to watch them grow. I hope some of the real trainers on here will comment.
