I'm probably going to order this dvd but just wanted to make sure that its set up so that a beginner can easily follow it. I've had about 5 different people helping me with focused heeling and all the differing techniques have confused and set me back.
I'm looking for one good clear training program to follow that is laid out in clear steps with good troubleshooting guidelines.
For those of you that own the dvd, is this a good fit?
Jessica, I own this DVD and I love it. I have watched it all the way through a couple times and will certainly watch it again and again.
If you are using marker training (and I'm sure you are), you will have no problem following Michael's methods in teaching the heel. This is a long DVD and a lot of Michael's students are featured. So we get to see other people making common mistakes (it's good to know other people are only human, too), and Michael explains how to overcome those problems. There is so much information given, you will not be able to absorb it all in one sitting, but the DVD is divided into chapters to make it easier to access different areas you may want to review again.
Ultimately, starting the work on newly acquired puppy will be the best case scenario but he goes through the techniques with older dogs and established habits as well.
It’s definitely an ABC that I think would benefit any person working on focused heeling. You may have to watch it a few times, as with most of his videos. He always makes it look easy and the techniques are quite simple in their execution but perfecting them, for us amateurs, is a totally different ball game.
I agree with the above posts, it's one of my favorite Ellis dvd's maybe second to playing tug. I enjoyed it all but my fav parts are the section where he goes over teaching your dog leash pressure and teaching the turns. If I just put a touch tub on the ground now Tenzin stands on it and starts spinning like a top.
That leash pressure is something else isn’t it. I think that was my biggest take away as well. The concept and actually the ease of this particular exercise totally resonated with me. Makes a lot of sense and what a result.
I had a pup at the time and this dog is now a wonderful heeler with an incredible understanding of the slightest bit of leash pressure. All credited to this Michael Ellis DVD.
