I have a beautiful, likely Czech line shepherd. I'll never really know.
I found her starving in the woods. Obviously just weaned a litter of pups. At about a year old. Frantic to get in the car.
Someone dumped her in those woods, as all my attempts to find an owner (even going door to door) were fruitless. In fact, one house had five dogs of various sizes/breeds (one a nice great pyr). All of these dogs had been rescued from the same woods. A popular dumping ground for unwanted dogs, according to their owner.
With the whipworm infestation my shepherd had (she was pooping bloody mucus), she wouldn't have lasted much longer out there.
Please spay your dog. If money is an issue, there are often organizations that will do it for about $100 or less.
Doesn't matter how cute the pups are. Any dog can get abandoned/dumped/dropped at the pound.
I am NOT all about spaying/nuetering every dog. But in this situation (and for many dog owners) it is the correct course of action.
I can't imagine where you could live that there are no other dogs within five miles.
I've been volunteering with a local rescue for the past few months...mostly working adoption events ect. Yesterday, the rescue called trying to find an emergency foster for a mom with 7 pups found in an abandoned house. The cops took them to the animal shelter, who said they could maybe keep them a week. The pups are TWO WEEKS OLD. Two have died. We finally found a foster...then were called about 3 more five weeks old. I never knew until the last few months that these calls are a daily occurrence. I also didn't know that young pups are PTS more often than not because of space/amount of time required to house them until they are old enough to be adopted. (shelters) I knew it happened...just not in this volume. Heartbreaking...
I agree with Keirsten that not all dogs should be spay/neutered in every situation, but I do think that the average pet owner, (myself included), really should spay/neuter.
