Dear Ryan: My suggestion is to not play with fire. I have a friend whose dog was attacked by a coyote and lived. It was horrible to see, horrible for her dog and a long and painful recovery. It happened on her own property and the coyote was not the least bit afraid of her and was never interested in playing. At a nature trail by my house, a coyote tried to lure a great dane into the bush-where of course a pack was waiting to attack it. The owner of the great dane was right there, the great dane was on a leash, the coyote came within a couple of feet of her, without a bit of fear.
For your pups sake, just protect him, take him somewhere else to run, give your pups a break. The coyote can do amazing damage within a very short time, have mercy on your dog.
We have coyotes in my neighborhood, they can climb my 8ft chain link fence in a flash, and do not mind coming into our yard. At night we take our dogs out on leashes to go potty before bed not taking any chances. Please be careful for your dogs sake.
There was a a dog at our vet's office several months ago; a large husky/golden mix. She was a mess... drainage tubes everywhere, stitches from one end to the other. She had been attacked by a pack of coyotes (I don't know how many). No injuries to her neck, however her back and rump were a MESS.
I was so surprised - this was a LARGE dog!
