So we had the Mast Cell Tumor removed and it turned out to be a level 2.
He opened his stitches a few times because he is so immune to pain and didn't realize it I guess.
Now he is all healed up and everything seems to be fine as far as the tumor is concerned. I have to check him regularly to make sure he doesn't get any more.
The night before we went to get his stitches removed I noticed some swelling on his right side in front of his back leg. it does not present like a tumor or lump. More like swelling from a sprain or something. The vet says it is probably a reaction to one of the meds and could take up to a few months to go away. It doesn't seen to bother him and he is back to his old energetic self. The vet seems completely unconcerned so I am just waiting to see if it goes down.
Isn't it wonderful to see the energy back? I'm sure you would feel better if there was no swelling but it sounds inconsequential and everything else seems to be heading in the right direction.
Go Jeter! (the dog not the baseball player...die hard Red Sox fan here)
he doesn't have allergies to my knowledge. I don't really like the ("it must be an allergic reaction to something") answer. It hasn't sat right with me since I heard it a month ago. I guess I should be a little more assertive with the vet and ask him to be more specific.
he seems to be completely back to his old self. Eating, pooping, playing, scaring the crap out of everything that has 4 legs that comes near, etc. I just dont like the obvious swelling on his rigt side.
I'm going to give it another month and see if it goes down. Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes.

Was that comment made in response to itching skin?
Because you're right that there are huge possibilities to eliminate before addressing the possibility that itchy skin is atopy.
But my reason for asking if he had confirmed allergies was the connection between mast cells and allergic reactions.
The lump may be a reaction to injected medication, if it is in a standard injection site I would suspect this is what the vet meant when he said "allergic reaction".

Ohhhh.
That "allergic reaction" comment.
My question about allergies was completely unrelated to the lump -- it was asking about past (pre MST) allergic reactions, and the O.P. answered that (no known allergies).
He has no allergies that I am aware of and hasn't had an allergic reaction to any other injection so far. he is about 4 years old and has gone through the entire series of shots.
Sometimes I get the feeling that when a vet doesn't have an answer they say "it might be an allergic reaction".
Being that I was dealing with a Mast Cell Tumor I an hyper sensitive to swelling and lumps and I want to make sure he is perfectly healthy.
Also I am getting him back t running along side the bike (his favorite thing in the world) and I want to make sure (because the swelling is significant and right in front of his back leg) that I am not putting him in harms way by running him.
He is so stoic that he wont complain. He will run himself to death. The vet said if he wants to run let him run.
