The same dog we have been having problems with, tried to bite our neighbor in the face when she got in the car to ride to the park with my mom. The dog was in the car, and was told that the niebhor, whom he has met many times would be coming with us. He was calmed down and was allowed to smell the nieghbor. She got in and for some reason he didnt like this and proceeded to angrily bark at her, then he went for her face...she of course jumped out of the car and he was taken home and put in the garage for the rest of the night to go to sleep. This is not the first time he has ridden in the car with a stranger. I suppose the car could be considered his property. Any advice?
Julia - Until you get control of this dog stop forcing him in a position to decide whos he trust and don't trust. I blame the humans the dogs already shown a tendancy to protect and bite if he feels invaded. Stop putting him that situation unless you are testing him after Ob and proofing him. I'd get a muzzle for him and start training him to follow your command.
All this is planned and discussed before hand, be consistence with the commands and training. This might takes weeks maybe months. Depending how good a trainer you and your husband are.
One test while muzzled and on leash have people walk by stop and talk to you. If he doesn't show any agression. Praise him. Then have them shake your hand. Praise him if he acts like you want.
If he pasts this test have your helper run by stop and run off, this will cause him to bark. The next time have the helper do the same thing but this time just stand back. On your command tell the dog to stop barking or "Thats enough" or "Stop" at the same time pop leash (give a correction). Get the dog to stop and have the helper approach slowing the dog should or will watch him, but if he has learned the command he will not bark or act aggressive. Praise him if this happens if it does continue the prodecure of command and correction.
Until you can get this kind of control don't bring people outside the family around this dog, you just asking for the dog to get destroyed and it will be your fault.
