Help. 18 month old female GSD. We've been through beginner obedience and she performs well. When she knows I have treats or a toy. When she knows I don;t have anything she'll just ignore me. Any ideas?
I am using Marker Training, with both treats and toys. When we're having a training session she does excellent, 100 out of 100 times. However, I let her outside for a run around, or to relieve herself, no treats in hand, no obedience.
At this point in your training it sounds like the toy or treats are being used as a bribe instead of a reward. Subtle difference!
"letting her outside for a run around or to relieve herself" could also be to much distraction to early in her training. If you call a dog to you when it's distracted and it refuses then all you've taugh it is that it can refuse.
Either don't allow her this much freedom or don't try doing obedience of any sort when she's in a position to refuse.
Consistency in training is the hardest thing to do for most beginners.

Keep her on a long line when you are outside so that you can have more control. It sounds like too much distraction for her at this point, to expect good obedience when she is outside.
