Nothing wrong with trusting the dog, but before you let the dogs alert scare you, its good to keep in mind that what they consider to be weird is usualy not dangerous.
For example, my dog doesn't like drunks. Around someone who is stumbling, slurring drunk she is very cautious. If we are in the car, and someone who is drunk walks by she will growl a good warning.
Really, the person probably has no harm in mind. They just need a nap, an asprin and a cup of coffee.
Not to say that Barbara's situation wasn't scary or real. Its just something to keep in mind when your dog alerts on something.
Most women alone with a baby would have reacted that way.
It kinda depends on the context you're in and the dog you have
You live in the city with all sorts of "entertainment". I live in the country where people just aren't around like that. Period. Missy ignores random critters. She ignores people walking past the car in town. She will sit in my room and ignore people going in and out of the house all day long. But after dark and the lights are out she does not ignore people coming into the house. If she got upset at something outside after dark it would be highly unusual and not normal - I'd be calling someone.
It kinda depends on the context you're in and the dog you have
Absolutely depends on the dog! The GSD we had way back didn't alert to many things - she loved everything and everyone, so her deep growl was very unusual.
The mix breed female we have now barks at EVERYTHING. Squirrels, deer, the koi in the pond (literally) UPS truck, etc... Falcon on the other hand, is like our other GSD - alert and will check things out, but far less to bark at any little noise (although he does hate crows and has a special growl for them :crazy. Consequently, I take HIS bark and growl far more seriously than I do Sadie's.
I'm again going to point out that the reason that I come out ahead in these situations is that I practice and seek professional level training with firearms.
Even with the multiple combat tours that I've had, the training that I've received at an upper-level firearm academy can't be beat - it will give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage a threat when you need to and come out on top.
I will once again suggest that anyone that is able should seek out training at one of these schools ( all of which I've attended and can personally recommend ) :
