I've been composting for over 20 yrs and would never think of using dog waste in the mix. Hot OR cold pile!
In the beginning I used a long meat thermometer and worried a ton about temperature. After the fist year I haven't bothered doing anything more then sticking my hand in the pile.
Probably another good reason for not using dog waste.
I am going to be starting my own little "experiement" with compost tea. I know folks who swear by the benefits and I've read studies which say it doesn't make a difference.
My plan is to purchase two of the same type of plants (two different varieties) and put them in the same sized containers using the same purchased high-quality potting soil. (I'm going to use purchased potting soil to prevent the variable of making my own soil mixture.) I'll put them side by side on the deck and water one of each variety with water and the other two with compost tea I'll make using my compost (from the big pile, not the worm hotel) and fish emulsion from the filter on my pond.
Should be interesting. I plan on using 2 tomato plants and 2 annuals.
