I want to start my dogs on scent matching. You give the dog a scent and ask it to indicate the human who matches that scent. You give the dog a kerchief with "Mr.X" s odour and ask it to indicate "Mr.X" from the line up.
My dogs can quite reliably do picking out a kerchief with my scent from alineup of 10 kerchiefs, now I want to do it the other way round.
How to go about doing it. How to teach the dog scent matching?
Any pointers , links, book references and most importantly your posts will be very much appreciated.
I've never done this but trying to think it through, using the system you have already devised with the hankies...
So far in your training, you've sent your dog after your own scented hankie.
Add another scented hankie to the mix from another person. If you could not have a person there, you could have an article of their clothing - show this to the dog, let them smell it, then give the command you are alread using to send them to smell the hankies and select the right one. You could keep the other person's scented hankie in a sealed plastic container prior to placing it out.
Get your dog used to having to select between yours AND other people's scented hankies.
Once they understand they are to bring back the other person's hankie, I'd start using an article of clothing from the person to get the dogs understanding it is not just hankies they are to identify.
After this, I'd line up people.
Does this make sense?
Again, I'm just taking the system which is currently working for you and extrapolating that out further...
