Hokie (yellow one from my sig picture) has a small prong collar that we have added extra links to. The fit is pretty tight on his neck but not so much pressure that it bothers him when there is no correction.
From my understanding, the proper fit is almost just under the ears of the dog, with the ring on the side. My problem is every time I put it on him like that, over the course of our walks it always seems to gradually slide down. Do I need to fit it tighter? I think I could put it half a link smaller without it being uncomfortable, but I am not sure thats an option (half link).
Try taking another link out. If the collar is still too tight after about twenty minutes then you need a different collar. You might be suprised by how much looser it seems once it settles in.
A good option if you decide a new collar is needed is a quick release. The quick release is good because you can adjust where you clip it to the chain and adjust the size without taking out more links.
Just make sure that you use a back up of some sort with a quick release collar.
I use a quick release right now, but it has a ring on the chain that looks designed for the clip. I'll take a closer look tonight to see if I can clip it anywhere else. And of course we use a backup
Its a second floating ring that adds stability and can also be used as an option for a slightly softer correction by hooking the lead on to both rings.
If you have been hooking the clip on to the dead ring, try refitting the collar by hooking it to the chain. You can probably take a few links out in this case, since the part of the chain that has not been used is at least three inches long.
If you still need to adjust you can try it the way Ana has it in her picture.
