PS
As an aside, I'd steer away from the canned sweet potato for diarrhea "fixing" because of the much higher sugar content. The gourds (winter squash, pumpkin) are what I want.

You can get acorn squash year round at most supermarkets around here for about 50 cents each. Steam in the microwave and spoon out. You have pretty near the same pumpkin effect.
Trader Joe's here has it ONLY from October through the winter holidays. I wish I remembered every winter to stock up!
Too bad, because it's a good price, good texture, good product.
I see it most of the time here. I have 5 cans in my pantry so haven't looked the last couple of months...but I have seen it any time I've looked for it there. Maybe it is just not as big a seller here & they have stock left over, from the holidays, still on the shelf. I've even seen it in the summer. Weird.

Yup, I've done this too, and frozen the puree. Butternut and Hubbard too.
Don't forget (to other readers): Don't put the whole thing in intact! Explosion! Hoo-
boy!
Either pierce the whole one in several places, or halve the squash first.

That may be it. I have asked more than once for them to carry it year-round, and the manager always says "I'll try," but he has even told me that it's not on his order list (the printed list of items to fill in quantity) until September, so all he can do is "special request" it on his inventory form.
sigh
And it's so cheap there! (That Natural Value one is pretty cheap, too, but not TJ's range.)

For those that live in Northern California, I was told that BelAir should have pumpkin through the Holidays. She (some sort of manager) asked why I had so much Libby's pumpkin when I checked out. And, then told me that when they heard about the shortage, they secured a supply. The last shortage had cause a lot of consumer complaints over the Holidays. I believe that Raley's and Nob Hill are also owned by the same company.
