The growth plates typically close around this age but it could be cutting it too close. The safe bet would be to x-ray her and/or wait till 18 months age, just to be sure. In the mean time swim her, best conditioning exercise known to dogkind
Ha ha, easy for you to say living in Texas! If there were somewhere warm to swim her I would, but no place around here comes to mind
Ok, I'll cut her back to 1/2 a lb. and maybe only for 1/2 our daily walk to start . . . she does not seem to mind wearing the vest at all, at least. It's a Ruff wear harness/vest with two flat 8 oz. lead fishing weights attached just behind her shoulders. (Not the one in my sig pic - that's a life preserver - she has many outfits)
Thanks for everyones comments and support!
Cheers,
Ci
I swim Koenig this time of year, Aaron swims his dog too. I know Mitzi's coat is nothing compared to our dogs, but lakes are a reasonable temperature (in Koenig and Danke's opinion), and if you brought a shammy with you, she'd be dry in 5 minutes.
Kelly, here in SD and I'm guessing further north into Canada our lakes are still full of ice Just this week there have been cabins destroyed by mini iceburgs crashing into them. Hopefully within a month the ice will be gone. It's in the 30's this week so there isn't much melting going on. Can't wait for my dogs to go swimming again though
Well I am very jealous your dogs can swim right now I guess we could do some ice burg agility and jump from chunk to chunk. (J/k, totally not safe, but it would be the only way we could be on the water haha)
Well, I guess a alot of Pac NW people wouldn't call it cold here - it's been in the upper 40's F . . . but Mitzi is like most Chihuahua's - cold and shivery even just going out for a walk unless it's one of those rare sunny days.
She has never swam before and I want to wait till I think she won't just freak out from the cold (and when I can get in there and swim with her, and I hate cold water) so the experience will be pleasant and self rewarding.
