I am not sure if this is the right place for this topic. I was reading in a Yahoo Club about this person has a puppy that is 3/4 GSD and 1/4 Wolf and wants to protection train it and possibly compete with it in Schutzhund. Here is what the original post said: "I am a new member here and I want to share about my new puppy. He is 3/4 German Shepherd and 1/4 wolf. Even though he is only 3 months old, already he has shown natural schutzhund talent. He loves tug-of-war, and once he gets a good hold, I have to tell him to let go, otherwise he never would. Today, when on a walk, he saw a man ahead of us on the road. He lunged to the end of his lead and began snarling, snapping, and barking as loud as he could. I am encouraging these behaviors but not letting him bite unless I am threatened. Thank you for reading this. Please reply with tips on further training."
Personally I think the person is out of their ever loving mind!!!
You're evaluation is correct, the person is nuts.
First of all, this hybrid breeding crap is a huge racket, he can say the dog is 1/4 wolf or whatever the heck, and it's not really something that can be proved. Anyone who would breed a wolf to a GSD is insane. And where did they get this wolf anyway.
He's got a nervebag and any TD who read the USA bylaws he/she agreed to will not allow this dog to participate in protection. Hybrids are mainly spook dogs. If he wants a Sch dog, he needs to go buy one.

This person is a ***complete*** idiot!!!! This makes me soooo angry!!!
In addition, most of the hybreds I have seen aren't. At one point there was a regestry that regestered "hybreds". They selected animals by their appearance. They didn't have to have a drop of wolf blood in them. Many "hybreds" are descended from this regestry.
In addition to that, as Ed has pointed out true hybreds are spooks. I have seen one attempted to be protection trained. When the dog was in the open it was very timid and very tentative when it bit. If it was in an enclosed area it was tenacious. In other words, if it can run it will, it feels trapped then it will fight like crazy. Definitly not protection dog material. In addition most of the people that own this type of animal are nuts. They have little or no concept of what they have or the real abilities of the dog and will create problems with the training they put on the dog. It ends up just creating more problems than it has naturaly.

Now, they are giving her advice and links on how to pass the BH. One trainer seems to be telling this person to go to a Schutzhund club and socialize the animal. This person also seems to live in Ohio and be 15 years old. Some of them are also telling her to go find a professional trainer who specializes in aggressive dogs and are saying that education is the answer for the hybrid, not banning and total destruction. Here is one of the replies in full except for name:
"Please note that the sport of Schutzhund requires any kind of dog to pass temperment tests before any compitition. We are not training for aggressive, mean dogs!!!!!!!! This kind of thinking makes a bad name for us all! The sport is all about complete and happy willing control. You can go to the link given to the person who asked about the BH (obedience) title and read what will be required. Please do not encourage this animal to be aggressive! If will only get you and the animal into a tremendous amount of trouble."
Well, if the TD is telling this person that he/she can bring this unfortunate creature to training, but only to work obed, that sounds reasonable. I've seen TD's do that w/screwy dogs in hopes that the dog will either get some socialization or the owner will get a clue and get a sch dog to train.
Yeah, where we just moved from, the hybrid racket was really hot. I get calls from pet dog cls all the time about their hybrids, *75% MacKenzie*! Really? Prove it. Odds are (if we're lucky) all they've got is a poorly bred Malamute. And they wonder why the dogs are so hard to train. Just wait, 2 yo seems to be the magic age when they really get into trouble.
I am closing this topic. Hybrids in schutzhund go along with Santa Claus and flying reindeer. Some things are not worth the effort to comment on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
