I was just listening to a meterologist, Joe Bastardi talk about this horrific tornadic activity being caused by a "fading la nina" and it is a result of the Pacific ocean's cooling temperature clashing with the warmer upper air temps. He said the 1970's (also a time of la nina) were the years which actually experienced the highest tornado frequency / activity. What is so surprising is that these storms are occurring so far south; normally they are higher up in the Ohio valley region.
He just said this year's hurricane season will have less storms but more will impact the US. Hmmmmm... time shall tell.
Thoughts going out to the folks so horrifically impacted by last night's events...
Eastern Massachusetts hasn't had a serious hurricane since I was a little kid. Judging by this weird weather pattern I wouldnt be surprised if this was the year for one.
I live a half mile from the water, up on a hill. No wonder that wind feels so cold compared to the ambient temp!
I remember going to the Cape (Cape Cod,Ma)for a vacation...we had booked our cabin months before & hurricane BOB had just gone thru there a couple of days before. I think that may have been that last one that hit there that did alot of damage.
There were signs on many building say...nice try BOB. As business were scrambling to get things back togther as much as possible for their tourest season.
Certain areas the buildings were destroyed. Many hotels & restrauns were closed. The straight line wind that came thru preceeding the hurricane has topped many of the wooded areas of pine trees. It was really weird to see. The tops of the trees in a straight line thru the pine groves....gone.
I was actualy thinking about Gloria, but Bob was probably way worse. I just remeber everyone preparing for Gloria. I lived in this same neighborhood, very near the harbor. I remember the grocery store runs and everyone taping their windows and stocking up on batteries.
