I have 2 possible club I could get in. They sound very different and I am new but want to learn the right way.
Club 1 would let me in with Dexter. They want a dog with some interest but not over the top prey drive. They say that a dog that has too much prey drive will get frustrated by being held back. The lower drive dog can be taught what to do if it shows some interest.
I was a bit disapointed by what I saw. Keep in mind that most I know is from this site. They showed me an 8month, a 1year and a 2year old dog.
All but the 2year old did not seem very in the protection work. The 8 month old was not going for the helper all that much. When he finaly got the bite pillow he just lay down and chew. It took a lot of work to get him there. The 1 yo was the same.
The 2yo was more in his work and was getting ready for SCH1. The TD say that this one had too much drive and then to lose focus and jump the gun in protection work. They were doing bark and hold. He would bark a few times then sneak a bite.
The say that they prefer a dog that as less drive so it does not take decision. That training will create more drive. Also mention that working with a dog with lots of drive can lead to a dog that can be unpredictable to be around as it could bite out of the blue. I could not get the TD to tell me if it was regarding a novice handle or in general.
There ob work look really good.
Second club is just the opposite. They want to work Harley. They say that he can learn selfcontrol and that there is no way to train what the dog does not have naturally.
All there dogs look eager to work. The place was much more noisy. (bark) The ob work look impressive, they used correction and reward for the older dogs and toy for the younger.
This club or trainer could take me on a one to one as I am not interested to compete but the TD really my dog. After he look at our work he found it good and say the Dexter would be more suited for agility, that seem to spark him up.
I am new to all this. I am not looking to compete but to have fun with my dog. I don't know really what to look for or ask. But I can tell what I saw at those 2 places is very different.
I am looking for experience point of view to make my final choise.
