I think I have some idea of the level of drive you are working with in Schutzhund. Jethro might have achieved it when we came home from our walk this evening and there was a coyote in our yard. I was trying to get Jethro past it and he just turn everything on full crank. I stood there holding him, kind of in awe of his raw power. The coyote? He just stood there, at the end of the block, out of reach but not running away. I wrangled Jethro into the house, and then basically walked him back and forth, back and forth, slowly getting him to sit, and finally down and settle. He's in his crate now, and quiet. But. Wow.
Coyotes are taking calves in a valley a mile from our farm this year. There was one, thin and light in color (shedding?) right in my pasture the day before yesterday.
I worry about my dog + coyotes. Seems whenever I see them I don't have the gun.
I have several Coyotes were I live. North suburbs of Chicago no less. THey come out mostly at dawn & dusk. When I have to take the dog out at these times I alway bring a flash light and look around the area before we go outside. I also bring a big heavy stick I leave by the door.
For me they keep the rabbit population in check, but I always keep a watchful eye. I can't really keep a gun were I live so the stick is my defense if I need it.

What would Jethro have done if he had been given free rein? I will never know. I'm sure the coyote would have run, but how far would Jethro go? But this is what he was bred for, to keep foreign canids out of his flock. I think life will be much easier for him once we have a fence surrounding the property and he can start to understand where our domain ends the big wide world begins.
