I like tethering for new puppies. Search "tethering" here and it'll turn up lots of threads on the subject.
At this early stage of the game, don't be too overly concerned about "training" anything. That'll come. Maybe even next week. Right now, just focus on getting him settled in, making nice poops, becoming comfortable with you and the rest of your family, and establishing some routines that make him feel safe.
