With AKC scent training I leave the articles hanging over in a weave type (onion) bag to air out.
The dog knows to pick out the fresh human scent.
Maybe to much of a short cut for some dogs but from SAR training I found Thunder would pick out a stick thrown in a pile of similar sticks as long as it had my scent on it.
Training him for AKC articles has been a piece of cake for me. KNOCK ON WOOD!
I also dislike rubbing the crap out of the article. It just seems to me that will create a larger scent pool around all the unscented articles. Give the dogs credit for having a better nose.
Mondio, and I think Belgian Ring, have an object search at the II and III levels. It is similar to the AKC scent discrimination with the dog finding the dowel that has the handlers scent. There are four other "clean" dowels as distraction.
Schutzhund has a real neat title available called the Stroberprufing (StP), or random article search. It is an object search where objects are placed in an area where they are not easily seen (longish ground cover) and where a group of people have walked over it (lots of contamination). The size of the area changes depending on the level of the title ( I, II or III) but goes up to 20x40m and from 2-5 objects, again depending on the level. The handler can give verbal and visual direction and the dog is judged on OB, intensity, and endurance in addition to the finds and the handler behavior.
Keith, a member here, has a StPIII on one of his Rotts.
