We did that once, a baby crow was on the ground after it's nest got blown out of a tree in a windstorm. We took it in, fed it, and it hung out with us for a few days. It was pretty cool, but then it really started making a fuss and we figured it wanted to get outside. I carried it out and let it go. It kind of glided and landed on the ground so I picked it up again. At this point it started squawking really loud and sure enough, there were two crows in the tree beside the house. I let the little guy go and he flew up and crashed into the branches, kind of tangled up. He sorted himself out and the adult crows were nearby so I figured he was okay.
Here in Vancouver we have a huge population of crows that fly to this giant rookery in a park across town every evening. When I told my neighbour about the babu crow he said, "they aren't trying to protect it, they are trying to kill it." at least, that is what he witnessed in the park across the street from his house. He said it was pretty horrific.
I like the umbrella idea, also a super thick hoody would do the trick.
