I'm confused and concerned about training my dog using food especially combined with toys.
I just lost one of my GSD last year to bloat and I've always been told no water or food an hour before or after activity. Now I'm watching the dvds and see that you do this a lot during training.
My girl chokes and coughs her treats up a lot during training and I'm using tiny cut up pieces of steak the size of the tiny zukes bits.
This link shows what I'm talking about, it's a youtube video with Cindy and Michael. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V_SUh-PCFI&feature=related
What should I do?
Thank you!!
Laura, I don't think that bloat would be a concern with the relatively small amount of food being consumed during a session of marker training. (JMO)
Re the choking, you could try cutting up the steak a little differently to see if that helps. I like longish, very thin strips. For your GSD you may need to be using treats that are larger than mini Zukes...
I use mini zukes & hot dogs pieces the same size with no problems. It's the crumbly treats that don't work as well for marker training.
I agree with Lynne...I doubt that the treats in any way caused the bloat.
I have a dog that runs around like a nut when he is let out to pee after eating dinner (raw) at night. But then he almost never walks anyway. So far he is still here. So I kinda think it is one of those things that happens. So sorry to hear that it happened to you.
Terribe & I can understand you fear of re creating the same scenario...no matter what you think that may have been. I am pretty sure it is not something that you did. Just happened.
I would however still not allow eating too soon before or after exercise or drinking alot of water either during those times. I also think that some pedigree lines of dogs tend to be more suceptable to it.
