well i need advice, i have a 7 yr old gsd female with bad hips (hd). she is rescued and i have had her just under 2 years. the problem is she doesn't like her nails clipped, she acts as though i was killing her. i have to have my boyfriend hold her down. while she yelps and fights to be free, and she sometimes does snaps, she is terrified, under socialize with the clipping obviously. oh but she lets the vet do it, no problem, can anyone relate? and suggestions?
If the vet has better luck and the fighting bothers you ,then keep taking it to the vet ,i totlaly agree with Deanna .But i have to sit on one of my dogs, always will i guess . joys of dogs .Peter
One of the reasons some dogs do better with someone else doing it is that they aren't on their own home turf and they don't feel as in control. In some dogs this can be a bad thing. But with others (such as yours in this case) it allows the vet to be able to do things that you couldn't. Be sure you are allowed to be there with your dog...if they won't let you go elsewhere. We always offer to let the owner be there...if they choose not to that is fine. We will sometimes use a muzzle to keep them honest but we never force anything on the dog. Not fair to them or the owner. Some dogs do better with the owner in the next room. But even in that case we are just in the next room so the owner can hear everything going on....you need someone who will be honest with you about how they are handling your dog. Sounds like you have a good situation!!!
What I have found that works well is to distract her while I am clipping them. I put her in a down and put some treats on the floor in front of her to eat while I clip her nails. She doesn't even seem to notice I'm doing it.
