For everyone who gave me advice on what to do to figure out why we had always battled intermittent cases of the runs in our rottie puppy, here is what ended up happening.
We never found out whether or not he ever had giardia or anyting else. I opted for this. We did 5 days of metrodonizole for a bacterial infection. About 5 weeks later, we did 10 days of it. Since then, and that has now been months ago, we have not had to wipe his little butt but one time after pooping. I see him poop fairly regularly, or see his poop n the yard, and it looks great most of the time. I know now not to worry over runny pooops on walks.
I have no idea what was wrong, but he had this going on seeminlgly from day one so I don't know what could have been the cause. his breeder is great, and extremely consientious about care, so it would seem unlikely he came "infected" with anyting. But whatever was giving him an issue was apparently fixed or possibly put into hiding by this approach. It hurts me to think he went all this time with something wrong. It wasn't for lack of trips to the vet that he stayed this way. We also haven't had another true bacterial infection although he has gotten into small amounts of horse manure three times since then.
Well,we continue to hope he stays this way, but I know that if it ever happens again, to look further and not just think it is the way he is.
Also, since we already had the food allergy testing done before we discussed it here, we took him off everything he listed allergic to( two months I think it was) and it did nothing. A sad waste of money I did not have to spend.
Well, that is where we are at. He is a heppy healthy 20 month old in a few days, and is absolutely hating the heat.
