I rescued a pitt bull terrier and she ended up having 13 puppies. They might have been premature, some did not look developed all the way. 9 lived and were getting pretty chubby and looked healthy. When they were 2 weeks old, one of them became lethargic for no apparent reason and died within a few hours of me noticing that something wasn't right. He was fine the night before. Then one by one the pups were becoming ill. I noticed one of the mothers milk sacks becoming hard so I immediately stopped letting the pups nurse fearing her milk may be toxic. I took a pup that didn't look well to the vet, they said that it was anemic and needed a transfusion. After doing this and $300. later said that it had a bacteria infection most likely from the mothers milk. The puppy died anyway. I tried hartz puppy formula, but the puppies would not take it. I came across your formula and the puppies immediately started eating it. Unfortunately that week, all but 2 puppies died. I am still hoping that these two will make it. They are still eating although one always throws up a little afterward (every time). I tried burping her, but no success. She will spit up a little bit then sneeze and it will come out of her nose spraying all over the place. I was wondering if she could have allergies to goats milk? I thought it could be a matter of getting used to the formula, but she has done this since day 1. This is the 6th day on the formula. She is active and still eats readily. Should I try condensed milk instead of goats milk? The other one does not do this at all and has had no problems eating, but I am afraid this one is getting constipated. She has not had a bowel movement in two days. She does not seem to be in pain, and still wants to eat, I am just worried she will get sick from not having a bowel movement. I haven't changed anything and wonder why she stopped going. Both of them have always gone at least once or twice a day. Is there anything I can do to help her go? I also was wondering if I should start giving them puppy chow since they are eating on their own now. I was afraid to do it so soon after such a dramatic change. Any information you could give me I would appreciate. The vet here told me they will probably all die.
Wiping their butts with a moist cotton ball should stimulate them to defecate and urinate.
I think that if they are 4 wks old you could give them puppy chow soaked in water
or your formula until it is a gravy consistency, and see if they will begin to eat it. Don't give too much the first day(one or two pieces soaked into a mush each) their bodies need to "learn" how to process solid food.
Another food you could try is human beef baby food (Gerbers or something similar). Dilute it with warm water. I would begin to offer water as well. Take care to keep them clean with a washrag and dry after eating, they will be messy.
I have not had good luck with condensed milk.
