I have a 6 month old (70lb) female great dane that I'm getting desensitized to a prong collar. She has a long neck, and very short hair, and seems to be right between the sizes of a loose and tight fit where it's supposed to go (high on the neck near the head).
Any suggestions on how to keep the prong where its supposed to be? I keep her flat collar on when she's using the prong also, but it doesn't help to keep it where it's supposed to be. I'm using a large HS stainless steel prong collar (with the rubber tips), since she gains weight and size so quickly, I can keep adding links as I need to.
Should I keep it on the little loose side and deal with the extra play in the collar for the next week or two, or ??
For what my limited experience is worth, I have 2 Boerboels that have prongs and I have had the same dilema with sizing - i.e. the whole growth spurt thing, and the ideal tension for me at least,is 'snug', during the growing periods, they have been very slightly loose and I just have to adjust them back up behind the ears as we walk; the short hair and the size of the necks is a bit of a pain, but with large/giant breeds I have found the prong an invaluable tool, I have the sprengers and they are a good quality product.
I use a 2.25 and a 3.25 sprenger for my dobes. I got the 3.25 at first following what store guy said.
I much prefer the smaller one, with the same tension it moves a lot less. The are both about 75#.
Get the 'small' 2.25 size HS Prong. It's just as strong, and you'll have a much easier time fitting it to a long thin neck. (Plus, the added bonus of it not being as bulky and 'mean' looking)
You really shouldn't need the rubber tips on a HS prong. The cheap prongs, yes... but HS have rounded tips. Just another thought.
Here is a short thread that we just had recently about fitting prongs on Dobermans. They have the same problem as Great Danes, long necks, short, slick hair...
My English Pointer has the same neck style/haircoat. She wears a small prong, and it slides minimally. (1''or 2'' over a period of hours with no adjustments) She's also got some majorly loose skin on her neck, which helps it slide)
