I was wondering where you guys place your crates and if you cover them or not. I am referring to when you leave for work or are not with your dog.
My question stems from the fact that my dog settles down fine and sleeps in his crate as long as there is no noise or movement stimulus. As soon as he hears people moving around or talking he becomes anxious.
I have tried using a fan to drown out any noise and also tried leaving the TV on but I am not sure what the cure for this is.
The crate is currently in my bedroom. Any suggestions?
I'm a little unclear. Are you saying you share a home with other people and that's who he's hearing? Or is he hearing people (neighbors?) outside the house?
If you have housemates, then I'm not sure you could really put the crate anywhere besides your own bedroom. My dogs' crates have always been in my bedroom, but I haven't had the specific issues you're dealing with.
You've only had this dog for a couple months, if I'm remembering from the other thread. He's still learning to adjust to his new circumstances, and hopefully with a little more time and some desensitization work, he will settle into your routine.
i put blue bed sheet with the elastic over my very large wire kennel then a blanket at the front. My dog is right by the front door to the home. It works pretty well. Also I did this the following because my dog barked and it worked. I thus have stopped because I was told he may later in life want to kill the bottle. I sprayed him in the face if I heard barking or lots of sound in his kennel. I only did this for 2 days and he knows when I say "quiet!" in a soft voice to do just that. I feel it's better than buying a bark collar and shocking the poor dog for using his voice. He got the message loud and clear and doesn't make lots of sound. Hell I can even tell him to quiet for scratching and he will stop. Or I can say yuck when he feels the need to lick his penis and he will stop...
How old is this dog? And how long has crate training been going on?
My dogs are all used to being crated in many places. The house, the car, in a tent, doesn't matter...in the house, I have one crate in the basement and one in our computer room.
