Hey everyone, I was at the local farmers market today and had to leave in a rather speedy fashion. There is a local "breeder" that frequents the next door corner(as the FM doesn't allow live animals) and people flock to her "stand" to see her cute little puppies. Well, today I went over to let my girls see the puppies. I don't agree with her breeding practices as she breeds like 5 or 6 different breeds and to me, that starts to feel like a mill. My opinions aside, I took the girls over to see the pups, she had 3 French Bulldog pups and 3 Baset pups there.
So, as we are looking and my oldest daughter is holding one of the frenchies, I was asked by another person looking if they had nice temperaments, and assuming they had temperaments like most bully breeds I said I think they had nice ones. I asked the breeder if I was correct and she agreed. I went on to say that most if not all of the bully breeds had nice temperaments giving they are raised right. I said, even pitbulls though people seem to think otherwise, and I went on to say how I had one in the past etc.
So, this breeder goes on to cringe at me believing pitbulls were good dogs if they are raised right. She also goes on to tell me and EVERYONE else that was willing to listen at how the pitbull had "something" in the acient brain makeup that makes them snap, go crazy and attack when they hear loud high pitched noises like kids screaming and little dogs barking. I just gave her the dumbest look and had to walk away before I made a scene. I feel bad, and A LOT guilty that I didn't contradict her statement. Please someone, tell me how WRONG is this lady? I mean, I know this can not be true, and looked all over the internet to see if there were ANY types of cases to even make this near true, or had even some truth to it. I can't find anything, anywhere.
Sorry for the long post, just had to vent a touch.. this lady was looked at like a professional and her opinion was taken very seriously.
I guess I want to go back to rebut her statement...
Seeing as her statement is based on hysterical superstition, it would be a massive waste of time to further engage the vicious idiot.
Pits are like the other bully breeds... I'm raising my 4th, I live in a state that has pits up the wazoo, I've treated them for 10 years in vet clinics. But even in a state w/a friendly pit on every corner, there are still the media-inspired fear mongers.
I put such folks in the same category as every other religious fanatic... infected w/brain weevils.

You can't find evidence supporting this ridiculous statement on any overall genetic weakness of the bully breeds, because it doesn't exist.
Due to the unfortunate influx of bad HUMAN influence there is now tremendous media bias and hysteria around this magnificant breed, as you witnessed. I don't need to bore the board on this topic yet again, so suggest you look here for your talking points: http://badrap.org/rescue/myths.html
..these folks are on the front lines and were instrumental in the advocacy and placement of the Vick dogs. The site is a wealth of information with no B.S...

Don’t have anything of substance to add to the excellent information Hilarie gave you and it sounds like you handled yourself well. If that kind of crap was said in front of me I don't think I could have stopped myself from firing back. It sounds like she’s pretty specific in her symbolic idiocy.
Ancient brain make up you say…. Can you refer me to where you learned this information?
Loud, high-pitched noises? Can you tell me how they would react to screeching car brakes? Do they attack on whim when they hear emergency sirens? What are they like around train wheels and creeky doors that need oiling? How about having a pet bird, cockatiels come to mind as having the ability to make one heck of a racket - loud, high pitched noises. Do you think it would be okay to have a bird, if he was caged all the time?
So this information you’re sourcing, the studies on the ancient brain make-up, did they have children and little dogs present when they were testing these dogs?
I think you get a picture of how I’d of lost my cool.
Not the best advice and I’m sure the site Hilarie linked you to has a much better approach to educating public idiots like this, but I don’t think I could have let a statement like that slip by. I’d of exposed the fear monger for what she was.
Good luck, I hope you get the chance to shed some light on this dim wit.
Hilarie, I've been meaning to mention, your pup is stunning. Incredible representation of the breed.
